Clause

Clause adalah gabungan kata yang mengandung subject

Jenis-jenis clause:

-        -  Independent clause

-       -   Dependent clause

-       -   Noun clause

-        -  Adjective clause

-        -  Adverb clause

1.       Independent clause

Subject + verb

Contoh:                    

I buy a new book

2.       Dependent clause

Connector + subject + verb

Connector: because, before, that, althought, after, when, whom, which, dst

Contoh:

Before I go to my fiends have + I do homework

I do homework before I go to my friends house

3.       Noun clause

Noun clause adalah klausa yang dapat berfungsi sebagai sebuah kata benda

Noun clause:

-          Object of verb

-          Object of preposition

-          Subject of sentence

Noun clause connector: what, when, where, why, how, whatever, wherever, wheter, if  dan that

Contoh:

We would love to hear how you are doing

(Noun clause berfungsi sebagai object of verb)

The city has a blue horse statue that is 32 foot tall

(noun clause berfungsi sebagai subject of sentence)

She was worried about how her sister was doing

(noun  clause berfungsi sebagai object of preposition)

4.       Adjective clause

Adjective clause adalah klausa yang berfungsi sebagai kata sifat yang menjelaskan noun (kata benda)

Relative pronoun:

-          Who, whom: people

-          Which: things

-          That: people/things

-          Whose: kepemilikan

Relative adverb:

When, where, why

Contoh:

-          The man wh lives next to me is friendly

-          Your teacher whom I met yesterday is beautiful

-          The girl that I met is very tall

-          The dress that you wear is good

-          I like the book which she gave yesterday

-          The girl, whose car had a flat tire, works as an English teacher

5.       Adverb clause

Adverb clause adalah subordinate clause yang berfungsi untuk menerangkan adverb, verb, adjective, dan lain sebagainya, yang ada dalam main clause

Adverb clause connector:

Time: after, as, before, since, until, when, while

Cause: because, since

Condition: if, whether

Contrast: althought, even thought, thought, while

Contoh:

Eva didn’t pass the exam because she didn’t study hard
